The Launch: Championship Recaps

San Antonio, Texas-

Championship Sunday played out at two different facilities for The Launch. Our staff recaps the winners on who survived and took home the ships.

(17U Platinum)

Centex Lockdown Elite 72 (5-0)
Houston Cowboys 58 (4-1)

The stage was set for a showdown on Sunday afternoon, as both Centex Lockdown Elite and the Houston Cowboys met in the finals, with 4-0 records each.

Both teams would come out and battle early, RJ Crawford (Langham Creek HS/2020) would attack the hole on a strong drive, absorb the contact, lay it in and knock down the free throw for the 3-point play, and make it a 14-12 deficit for the Cowboys.

From then on the Cowboys would not get any closer as Lockdown would use a 26-12 run to break open the game, at the half, 40-24.

6’5” guard/wing Bennett Mohn (Lake Traivs HS/2019) led the way with 10 early points, scoring by attacking the hoop and using his soft touch from the perimeter.

Scoring would pick up for both teams in the 2nd half, but unfortunately the stops were not coming for the Cowboys, as Lockdown would go up by as many as 22pts, leading 56-34 near the mid-point of the second half. Josh Baker (Cedar Park HS/2019), showed his versatility playing on the wing and what seemed to be, constantly attacking into the paint, tied for a team high 13pts. Bennett Mohn finished with 13 as well, connecting on two treys.

AJ Smith (Jarrell HS/2019) showed a nice shot from outside, adding two treys, and going for double digits, adding 10pts for Lockdown.

In the loss, the Cowboys were led by Branden Holt (Cy-Ranch HS/2019), a nice looking 6’5” athlete who showed he could play some on the wing and down low. He had a game high 20 points, and teammate, Aaron Davis, Jr (Klein HS/2019), pitched in a dozen, but it wasn’t enough as the game was called with just over a minute to go.

(17U Gold)

SA Tarheels 73 (4-1)
SA Spartans 55 (2-3)

Two teams that rebounded very well from an opening loss in pool play, made it to the Gold championship and the first half showed why.

The Spartans would race out to a 9-2 lead, when Brandon Vigil (McCollum HS/2019) would come up with the steal and race down court for the layup, making it a 9-4 game. That would seem to wake up the rest of the Tarheel team.

Three pointers would start falling for the heels, Adam McBee (Brackenridge HS/2019), Jordan Armstead (Southwest HS/2018), Chris Benavidez (Brackenridge HS/2018), and Vigil would all connect from deep before the break.

Coach Lopez and his Spartans would answer the bell, going point for point, as Jacquez Harris (Cole HS/2018) and Isaiah Vasquez (Brackenrdige HS/2019), would lead the Spartan charge, with 9pts & 6pts respectively, giving them the one point advantage at the half, 29-28.

In the 2nd half, it was more of the same all the way until the six minute mark when Armstead would assert himself, attacking and using his jump shot to spur a 9-2 run in favor of the heels, effectively opening the game up 61-47 with 5 minutes to play.

Armstead had a team high 18pts for the game, while Marc DeLa Cruz (Brackenridge HS/2018) pitched in 12pts.

Harris carried the scoring load for the Spartans, getting bucket after bucket attacking in the lane and getting to the hoop. Christian Flores (St. Anthony/2020), would step up as well, tallying 15pts, but nobody else hit double digits for the Spartans, as they fell in the Gold final.

(16U Championship)

CenTex Attack 78 (5-0)
SA Hustlers 2021 70 (4-1)

CenTex Attack tore through the competition with multiple double digit wins to get them into the championship. The SA Hustlers, comprised of 2021’s, were tested several times throughout the tourney but found a way to fight to the championship game.  CenTex Attack led by Jaxon Shores (2020), Walker Baty (2020) and Carson Perkins (2020) came ready to play. The fast play of Attack allowed Shores to cut down the lane making incredible plays with his shiftiness in the lane.

The SA Hustlers were the only team in the tourney to keep pace with Attack as Dominic Davila (Floresville HS/2021) was a handful down low as he finished with 28 points, but wouldn't get much help as Ayden Zavala (Madison HS/2021) would be the next highest scorer with 10. The game remained close as Carson Perkins continued to hit 3s as he had done all tourney and Walker Baty was able to keep his own as he finished with a team high 18 points.  The majority of the game was a back and forth battle but in the end CenTex Attack was able to take control and hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

(15U Championship)

Brotherhood Elite 54 (5-0)
S.T.A.T Elite 27 (4-1)

The most anticipated game turned out to be a one sided victory for Brotherhood Elite. Both teams came into the championship undefeated, but S.T.A.T Elite needed overtime in the semifinals in order to get to the championship, and eventually the fatigue started wearing.

The game started off quick for Brotherhood as they jumped up to a double digit lead.  Though S.T.A.T Elite made a great effort to fight back into the game you could tell their legs were gone. Noah Robledo (’21) of Brotherhood showed the gym why he was a top 5 2021 baller in the Tri-regions as he finished with 21 points.  Connor Cox who had been an offensive threat from behind the arc finished with 8 points for S.T.A.T. Elite.
